Durch die Entdeckung der allgemeinen Gravitation, welche umge staltend auf die Physik einwirkte, erfuhren auch die chemischen An schauungen einen tiefgehenden Einfluss. So vorsichtig sich Newton ?ber die Ursache der Schwere ausdruckt, so unzweideutig ?ussert er sich ?ber die Ursache chemischer Wirkungenj) die er als eine Attraktion, also als eine Fernewirkung durch den Raum ansah. Mit der Gravita tion erkl?rte er die chemische Anziehung nicht identisch. Wenn sie auch, wie jede mechanische Wirkung, nie einseitig, sondern nur als eine gegenseitige Wechselwirkung stattfindet, so nahm er doch an, dass sie von der Entfernung in anderer Weise abh?nge als die allgemeine Gravitation.
