This term 'Christian Spirituality' has become very fashionable, but requires definition. It derives from one of the classifications habitual to the Church of Rome, and formulated by M. l'Abbe Pourrat in his La Spiritualite Chretienne. He distinguishes between 'Dogmatic,' 'Moral,' and 'Spiritual' Theology, and the greatest of these is Spiritual Theology, which is based upon the others, but is 'above them' in so far as it is a branch of the science which deals, not with abstract statements of faith and objective laws of conduct but with the life in Christ itself, the reality of that union with Him, which all traditions in some form would assert as the meaning of our salvation. --From the Preface Gordon S. Wakefield was the first Methodist Principal of the Queen's College in Birmingham. He also served as Chaplain of Westminster College, Oxford. He is the author of several works on spirituality and devotion including The Life of the Spirit in the World of Today and Groundwork of Christian Spirituality.

Biographie:
Gordon S. Wakefield (1921-2000) was ordained as a Methodist Minister in 1947. He soon established a reputation as a student of spirituality and liturgy and has contributed many important papers to the current theological debate. He has been a delegate to the World Council of Churches; Member of the Joint Liturgical Group; Joint Secretary of the B.C.C. Committee on the Spiritual Life and was also Chairman of its Committee for Unity in Prayer. His published books include: The Life of the Spirit in the World of Today, Puritan Devotion, and On the Edge of the Mystery.
