      • Résumé :
Against Nature by Joris-Karl Huysmans is a novel and narrative almost entirely on its principal character, and is mostly a catalogue of the tastes and inner life of Jean Des Esseintes. Des Esseintes, is a neurasthenic aristocrat who has turned his back on the vulgarity of modern life and retreated to an isolated country villa. Here, accompanied only by a couple of silent servants, he pursues his obsessions with exotic flowers, rare gems, and complex perfumes and embarks on a series of increasingly strange aesthetic experiments. Charles-Marie-Georges was a French novelist who published his works as Joris-Karl. He is most famous for the novel ? rebours (Against the Grain or Against Nature). His style is remarkable for its idiosyncratic use of the French language, wide-ranging vocabulary, wealth of detailed and sensuous description, and biting, satirical wit.

        Biographie:
Joris-Karl Huysmans (1848-1907), commonly published as J.-K. Huysmans, was a French novelist, critic, and civil servant whose work helped move French fiction from Naturalism toward Decadence, Symbolism, and spiritual inquiry. Born Charles-Marie-Georges Huysmans in Paris to a Dutch father and French mother, he spent much of his adult life working in the French Ministry of the Interior while building a literary career marked by sharp observation, stylistic intensity, and a deepening fascination with art, religion, and the sickness of modern life.Huysmans began as an associate of ?mile Zola and the Naturalist school, publishing novels that examined contemporary urban experience with grim detail and social precision. With Against Nature, however, he broke decisively from Naturalism, creating a work centered almost entirely on one man's refined perceptions, neuroses, aesthetic obsessions, and spiritual disgust. The novel became a landmark of Decadent literature and helped define the fin-de-si?cle imagination, influencing writers, artists, and readers drawn to the extreme edges of taste, artificiality, and psychological withdrawal. In later works, including L?-Bas, En Route, The Cathedral, and The Oblate, Huysmans turned increasingly toward occultism, Catholicism, mysticism, and religious conversion. His career is therefore often read as a movement from Naturalist documentation through Decadent exhaustion into spiritual searching. Today he remains one of the crucial figures of late nineteenth-century French literature, important to readers of literary modernism, Decadence, Catholic literature, psychological fiction, and the history of aesthetic rebellion....
