Here is the harrowing true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man living in New York. He was kidnaped by unscrupulous slave hunters and sold into slavery where he, endured unimaginable degradation and abuse until his rescue twelve years later. A powerful and riveting condemnation of American slavery.
Biographie:
Solomon Northup (c. 1807-after 1857) was a free Black farmer, musician, and family man from New York who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into slavery. Stripped of his identity and separated from his wife and children, he spent twelve years enslaved in Louisiana before friends and legal authorities helped secure his release in 1853.Northup published Twelve Years a Slave the same year he regained his freedom. His detailed account of kidnapping, forced labor, violence, survival, and eventual liberation became one of the most important firsthand narratives of American slavery. He later spoke publicly in support of abolition, though the details of his final years remain uncertain....
Sommaire:
A free Black man is kidnapped, stripped of his identity, and forced to endure twelve years of slavery before finally reclaiming his freedom. In Twelve Years a Slave, Solomon Northup recounts how he was deceived by two men offering him work as a musician, kidnapped in Washington, D.C., and sold into slavery in the American South. Born free in New York, Northup suddenly found himself unable to reveal his true identity without risking violence or death. Transported to Louisiana, he endured years of forced labor, beatings, hunger, fear, and separation from his wife and children. Northup records plantation life with extraordinary precision, describing both the cruelty of enslavers and the courage, intelligence, and humanity of the people held in bondage. His account also preserves the unforgettable stories of fellow enslaved people, including Patsey, whose suffering reveals the particular brutality inflicted upon enslaved women. First published in 1853, the same year Northup regained his freedom, Twelve Years a Slave became one of the most important firsthand narratives of American slavery. Direct, detailed, and deeply moving, it remains an essential work of African American literature and United States history....
