Résumé :
Don Juan is Lord Byron's satirical masterpiece. It was based on the legend of Don Juan, which Byron reverses portraying Juan not as a womanizer but as a man easily seduced by women. It is a variation on the epic form. Byron himself called it Epic Satire. Modern critics consider it Byron's masterpiece. When the first two cantos were published anonymously in 1819, the poem was criticized for its immoral content by the critics of the day despite its immense popularity.
Biographie:
Lord Byron was one of the central figures of British Romanticism, a poet whose fame, scandal, wit, political intensity, and literary daring made him one of the most celebrated writers of the nineteenth century. Born George Gordon Byron in 1788, he became internationally famous with Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and later produced major works including Don Juan, Manfred, The Giaour, and The Corsair. His life and writing helped create the enduring image of the Byronic hero: brilliant, rebellious, wounded, seductive, and morally dangerous.Byron's role in the Villa Diodati gathering was crucial. During the stormy summer of 1816, he proposed that the assembled company each write a ghost story, a challenge that led to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and John William Polidori's The Vampyre. Byron's own Fragment of a Novel remained unfinished, but its atmosphere and aristocratic menace helped shape Polidori's later vampire tale. For readers of Romantic literature, Gothic fiction, vampire fiction, and literary history, Byron's presence is central to the night that helped alter the course of modern imaginative literature....
