Egocentric network analysis is used widely across the social sciences, and is increasingly being employed in business, informatics, and the natural sciences. This approach focuses on individuals sampled from a population, and their direct social ties. A fundamental tenet is that each of these individuals is embedded in a personal community - partially of their own creation and nearly unique to them - whose composition and structure have important consequences for wellbeing and life chances. Egocentric network analysis requires a distinct set of methodological tools that overlaps only minimally with sociocentric network analysis, in which there is a common network boundary shared by all actors. However, until now there has been no single comprehensive reference for studying ego networks.
