At 5.15pm an incendiary lands in Shetland Road, damaging Marner School. Thirty-eight minutes later another caves in a roof at Malmesbury Road near Ted's old school. At 5.59 an incendiary breaks a roof in Arnold Road. Addington Road is hit at 6.07, Bow Road three minutes later, Mornington Grove two minutes after that. At 6.19 an incendiary bomb sets fire to the coal yard on Mile End Road. Not long after that the enemy is heading back east, leaving Woolwich Arsenal, the Gas Works at Beckton, the Anglo-American oil at Purfleet and the East and West India, Surrey and Milwall Docks in flames. Two miles to the south and east of Bow, Silvertown is an inferno, melted sugar from the Tate and Lyle factory covering the river in bitter, burning caramel.

Another bomb lands on the Needlegun pub and blows out the beautiful milk glass lights and the painted frontage of Kelly's pie and mash shop, a block or so away. By dawn, 843 incidents have been recorded, 400 souls have lost their lives, another 1200 or so are injured - and the East End has been changed for ever.
