In making a school-edition of 'gustav Adolfs Page,' I unfor tunately found it necessary to take several liberties with the text, the greatest of which was the omission (from Chapter III.) of a remarkably vivid and picturesque episode, the suicide of the Slavonian Soldatenmadchen Corinna. It was also thought best to make the notes more copious than would seem to be warranted in a school-edition designed for advanced reading, in order' that the present volume might serve the English-speaking student Of German as a proper introduction to the large list of modern novels, headed by Scheffel's Ekkehard,' which revive or imitate the speech of former times. The main purpose of the notes is to explain all words and phrases not to be found in an ordinary german-english Lexicon and such as would easily be misunderstood in their signification. No origi nality can be claimed for the historical notes, which are col lated from standard writers.
