      • Résumé :
A young man's search for the truth behind his father's murder becomes a study in obsession, suspicion, and moral revenge. In Andr? Corn?lis, Paul Bourget turns a family crime into a dark psychological investigation, following Andr? as he revisits the trauma of childhood and becomes convinced that the official story of his father's death conceals a more intimate and terrible betrayal. The result is not a conventional detective novel so much as an early psychological crime novel, built around memory, inheritance, suspicion, and the dangerous logic of a mind determined to make the past confess. Bourget was one of the major French psychological novelists of the late nineteenth century, and Andr? Corn?lis shows why his work belongs in a crime and noir line as well as in literary fiction. Its tension comes from inward pressure: a son reconstructing the scene of violence, weighing motive and character, and slowly trapping himself in the moral consequences of discovery. First published in 1887, the novel stands near the roots of psychological suspense, domestic noir, and crime fiction concerned less with police procedure than with guilt, motive, and the private damage left behind by murder....

        Biographie:
Paul Bourget (1852-1935) was a French novelist, critic, poet, and essayist whose fiction helped shape the late nineteenth-century psychological novel. Born in Amiens and educated in Paris, Bourget first became known as a literary critic before establishing himself as a novelist deeply interested in motive, conscience, social pressure, and the hidden emotional forces that govern human behaviour. His fiction often studies characters at moments of moral strain, making him an important figure for readers interested in psychological fiction, French literary realism, early modern crime fiction, and novels of inward suspense.Bourget's work was widely read in Europe and the English-speaking world during his lifetime, and his influence extended beyond literary fiction into the development of psychological suspense and moral crime narratives. In novels such as Andr? Corn?lis, he brought the methods of close psychological analysis to stories of murder, suspicion, family secrecy, and revenge, helping to bridge the gap between nineteenth-century realism and the later crime novel's fascination with guilt, motive, and damaged interior lives....
