The Word is Out is a compilation of the winners and runners up of the Eastbourne Writes Prize 2013 competition. The result is an eclectic mix of poetry, short stories and flash fiction. The town of Eastbourne and surrounding areas has again proven that it has ample writing talent and a vivid imagination to boot. To quote this year's judge, creative writing teacher Jacq Molloy: 'Reading entries for a writing competition is like going on a blind date. There is a heightened sense of excitement about what is to come, combined with hope that the experience will unearth 'the one'. In this competition which had several categories, there was opportunity to discover gems both in the poetry and story sections.' The theme 'The Word is Out' has been written about from the most innovative angles, no story, no poem is the same, not even remotely. This year's book is a varied work that takes the reader through journeys and evokes every human emotion you can think of. Continues Molloy: ' There was plenty in the entries to enjoy as a reader and acknowledge as a judge. There was humour, suspense, poignancy, surprise and playfulness. Some writers played with language, others played with reader expectation to deliver a killer, and often unexpected ending. There were familiar subjects (love, death, obsession, old age) handled in inventive styles. Those stories and poems that stood out to achieve prizes utilised the tricks of the writer's trade such as sharp observation, characters we believed in, settings we could experience through the senses.' This year's cover is painted by accomplished local artist and art teacher Gillian Toft, whose comprehensive style lends itself excellently for book covers and illustrations. It is a pleasure to see this local book festival produce such a worthy contribution to the readers and writers world.
