As freight transport has grown exponentially over the last decades, policymakers have become aware of the need to include freight flows in quantitative evaluations of transport systems. Whereas freight modeling practice in the early years was inspired by passenger transport models, by now it has developed its separate stream of methods and techniques inspired by disciplines such as economic geography and supply chain management. This new and unique reference book provides insight into the state-of-the-art of freight modeling. The focus is on models that are used to support public transport policy analysis. Freight Transport Modelling systematically introduces the latest freight transport modeling approaches and describes the main methods and techniques used to arrive at operational models. Besides summarizing the latest achievements in fundamental research, it describes the state of practice and provides advice for practitioners about how to cope with typical challenges such as limitations in data availability.
