The two books of this series have been named the Modern English Course, first because they aim to present the subject of language in accordance with modern principles of teaching, and second because they make no attempt to teach historical grammar.

The chief purpose of this book is to awaken an inter est in the correct use of the English of to-day. It aims to give our boys and girls a clear insight into the structure of the English sentence, ability to express their own thoughts and to understand the thoughts of others, and an appreciation of the higher uses of language in literature.
