Freytag's excellent comedy Die Journalisten (the Newspaper Men), is a favorite with all lovers of German life and literature. There are many reasons for this. In the first place, its career on the stage has been ex ceptionally long, honorable, and brilliant; its perennial vigor as an attraction is remarkable. Then it is a literary masterpiece. From its first publication to the present it has been the admiration of stylists; and crit ics have had nothing but praise for its artistic excellence. Again, in subject matter its rank is high. Its portrayal of German ideals illustrates this. Next to Lessing's Minna. Van Bamhelm, it gives the best picture of true national character found in all the German drama. Lastly, it gives dramatic expression to lofty moral ideals and portrays that devotion to principle and country which was characteristic of the patriots of Germany who, half a century ago, were laboring and suffering to give the people their rights.
