Résumé :
Excerpt from L'Abb? Constantin
This novel, which has had such an extraordinary popularity among general readers, seems destined to no less popularity in the class - room. While the moral tone of the book is sound, it has been thought best to omit a few brief passages that might be considered by some American teachers objectionable. The notes have been made unusually full in order to adapt the book specially to supplementary, out - of - class reading, for which it is particularly well fitted. All words whose spelling and meaning are the same in English and in French have been omitted from the vocabu lary, as also have been those so nearly alike in the two languages as to occasion no di?iculty. Words used in an unusual sense have generally been defined in the notes rather than in the vocabulary, and words defined in the former place will, as a rule, not be found in the latter. The kind assistance of Professor Fontaine of Washington, D. C., in the preparation of this book is hereby gratefully acknowledged.
