Raversando un giorno per l'agro, dove gli T scheletri degli acquedotti attestan meglio che Roma fu, vidi una lunga fossa tracciata al lavoro degli scava'tori, la quale dirittamente cor reva su per l'ultime propaggini di un colle, che ?'agguagliavano al piano.'a monte della fossa eran delle capanne di terra e di frasche: a valle, nel piano, il mondo, deserto e libero.

Un uomo, ign?do e grande, salt? quella fos'sa e cadde fulminato sulla terra.

Sopra, nel cielo, passavano grandi nuvole bianche e gridi di uccelli, senza fine.
