I h0pe the discourses are not seriously Open to literary objection; but they were prepared with less thought of rhetoric than of doctrine. I did not stop to cull phrases. I cared only to say what I had to say as intelligibly and forcibly as possible. I might have re written the Discourses into Essays. But I preferred to sacrifice what would thus have been gained in compactness and literary finish, for the sake of retaining the original freedom of treatment and directness of popular address.
