Among the world's great reformers I think we may justly name Richard Wagner. All musical composition Since his time has been greatly effected by his reforms. He was both bold and daring, and by the production of some Of his dramas he threw the world of musicians into bitter contro versy. He was a man whose face Spoke of power, a big intel lect and a stubborn will. His eyes were singularly express ive. And in calm moods one could see a great soul Shining through their lustrous depths. His voice was full and rich, giving the listener a foretaste of the music, the melody of the man himself. He was calm, self-reliant, Strong in the love of all that was noble and beautiful, yet he was more generally judged by his aggressiveness and self-defense in assertion Of what be deemed to be the truth. There Was nothing small about Richard Wagner. Even in his boyish days his mind was occupied with the study of masterpieces whether Of music or literature, his aims were ever towards high ideals. That his manners were to some extent unconventional there can be no doubt, but those who knew him best deny that there was even the semblance Of truth in the absurd stories that were circulated with regard to his extraordinary eccentrici ties.
