Résumé :
It's hard to study endangered species. They are rare, some exist in captivity only, and for those still in their native habitats, any experimentation can have an effect on survival. Yet in the fossil record, there are wonderful remains to be found in natural accumulations such as reefs, shell beds, and caves, and bones can also be found in kitchen middens and other archeological sites. And data to provide an historical context for present-day decisions. The Paleontological Society convened a short course, aimed largely at paleobiologists, to explore the ways the past can be used to manage for the future. It brought together a remarkable group of scientists, each of whom contributed a paper to the companion short course volume published by the Paleontological Society. Our volume is an adaptation of the short course notes, with one new chapter, epilogue, intro, and foreword.
