Blackwell Companions to Philosophy. This student reference series is centred on analytic philosophy but also covers important aspects of the continental tradition and of non-Western philosophies. It offers a comprehensive survey of philosophy as a whole. The entries in each volume combine summarized information on names, terms, and movements, with critical personal essays contributed by leading figures. Each essay is cross-referenced and supported by a selected bibliography. A Companion to Ethics. In this volume some of today's most distinguished philosophers survey the whole field of ethics, from its origins, through the great ethical traditions, to theories of how we ought to live, arguments about specific ethical issues, and the nature of ethics itself. The book can be read straight through from beginning to end . yet the inclusion of a multi-layered index, coupled with a descriptive outline of contents and bibliographies of relevant literature, means that the volume also serves as a work of reference, both for those coming afresh to the study of ethics and for readers already familiar with the subject.

Biographie:
Peter Singer is Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics at the University Center for Human Values, Princeton University. He is the author of Animal Liberation, first published in 1975, and is widely credited with triggering the modern animal rights movement. His Practical Ethics is one of the most widely used texts in applied ethics, and Rethinking Life and Death received the 1995 National Book Council's Banjo Award for non-fiction. He is also editor of, with Helga Kuhse, A Companion to Bioethics (Blackwell, 1999) and Bioethics : An Anthology (Blackwell, 1999) and some of his most important and challenging essays have been collected in Unsanctifying Human Life (Blackwell, 2002, edited by Helga Kuhse). He was the foundation president of the International Association of Bioethics.
