A manuscript copy of a poem by the ancient Roman author Lucretius is discovered in a 15th-century German monastery by the personal secretary of a disgraced and deposed pope. The man's name is Poggio Basciolini and he is unusual for his time: driven by curiosity, when curiosity is not considered a virtue but a vice, fascinated with the ideas of ancient and pagan Greece and Rome. Lucretius s poem, On the Nature of Things, is strikingly modern : the universe is made up of atoms that are shared by the stars, oceans, animals, and us - a sort of early "unifying theory"; that there is no afterlife, but rather than being something to fear, we should be inspired by this to live life fully. Greenblatt weaves together the tale of the "book hunter" Poggio and his quest with the fall of Rome and the precarious survival of Greek and Roman texts in monasteries.

In the winter of 1417, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late thirties plucked a very old manuscript off a dusty shelf in a remote monastery, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. He was Poggio Bracciolini, the greatest book hunter of the Renaissance. His discovery, Lucretius' ancient poem On the Nature of Things, had been almost entirely lost to history for more than a thousand years.
