To tell in precise terms what moral or other Object the poet had in writing this story would be a pedantic attempt. As appears from the lines quoted, the author deprecates the attempt to mix up fancy and reality. Schiller said at the time The meaning is manifest and any one can see it. And this is true. In so far as there is a moral tendency in the tale, it is in the suggestiveness of the story as a whole. We are in the realm of fable and superstition, but from confused and irregular beginnings the world has finally emerged into a noble presence and holds out the promise of a great future. The grand temple of humanity has risen from its depths, the powers of evil have been turned to a beneficent use, and a busy multi tude lives and thrives in regions which were formerly the haunts of ignorance and superstition. This new world is ruled by three great powers wisdom, outward appearance (or show and forte. Love, the great educator, does not rule, for that is not her mission, but all culture is based on love. The pro found truth expressed in these words may not at first be recognized, but the more we study life, the evolution of nations and of individuals, the more clearly shall we understand its significance.
