    • Résumé :
Excerpt from Beginning French: Exercises in Pronouncing, Spelling and Translating With a Vocabulary of Familiar Words and a Collection of Easy Phrases and Dialogues, in French and English This book is intended to be progressive. If the efforts to make it so have been successful, those who use it thoroughly will never find themselves called upon to begin any lesson before the way to it has been prepared; while those who neglect one of the lessons will be apt to find something lacking to their comprehension of lessons further on. The reading lessons are followed by easy exercises, limited to the number of seventy, and not carried beyond the present tenses of the auxiliary verbs. They are enlivened, as far as possible, by the adoption of the conversational form; that being most at tractive to children. The reason for not introducing English exercises for translating into French, is that children most easily learn foreign languages in the same manner that they learn their own. In rudimentary instruction, stated rules, encumbered with their necessary exceptions, present to young pupils difficulties which are not easily overcome, and sooner or later lead to a stand still, thus making repetitions necessary, and robbing instruction of one of its greatest attractions, - the charm of novelty.
