Présentation Boswell's Presumptuous Task de Adam Sisman Format Broché
- Livre Littérature Générale
Résumé : A sparkling account of the writing of one of the most celebrated biographies of all time - 'The Life of Samuel Johnson' - and an account of the friendship that blossomed between writer and his subject. James Boswell's 'The Life of Dr Johnson' is acknowledged as one of the greatest and most entertaining books in the English language: a model of biographical endeavour and achievement, an epic attempt to capture the spirit of a man who embodied the spirit of an age. And yet Boswell himself has generally been considered as little more than an idiot, condemned by posterity as a lecher and a drunk, a man who spent his short life in various states of dissipation, on a fruitless search for amusement and diversion. But Adam Sisman's sparkling account of the writing of Boswell's biographical masterpiece tells another story: of how Boswell succeeded in his presumptuous task of capturing the character of his garrulous, curmudgeonly, beloved friend Samuel Johnson on the page. And by tracing the friendship between the writer and his subject Sisman provides a fascinating, detailed and richly textured account of the writing of one of the masterpieces of literature in the English canon.
Biographie: Adam Sisman is a writer specialising in biography, who has written the lives of A. J. P. Taylor, Hugh Trevor-Roper and John le Carr?. His second book, Boswell's Presumptuous Task, won a National Books Critics Circle award. 'Mr Sisman has an ideal biographical style: inquisitive and open, serious yet not severe,' Dwight Garner wrote in the New York Times, 'I'd read him on anyone.' Sisman has also edited several volumes of letters, including two volumes of letters of Patrick Leigh Fermor. In 2019 he published a short book about a con man, The Professor and the Parson: A Story of Desire, Deceit and Defrocking. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and an Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews.
