In Mario Giacomelli's work, birds are never mere motifs : they are one of the territories where his vision of the world plays out, at once lyrical, abrupt and shaken by the fragility of life. From the agricultural landscapes of the Marches to the windswept plains, Giacomelli reveals their presence as a form of writing made up of traces, sudden appearances and disappearances. Often captured in flight, sometimes reduced to ink silhouettes against an overexposed sky, the birds become graphic, almost calligraphic signs, revealing the constant dialogue between the natural order and the disorder of human action. In these images, the extreme black and white - characteristic of his style - reinforces the tension between appearance and disappearance. Biographie:
Born and died in Senigallia, where he lived his entire life, Mario Giacomelli (1925-2000) was one of the leading figures in post-war Italian photography. Trained as a typographer, he discovered photography in 1953 and quickly adopted a radical style : extreme contrasts, graphic compositions, and an intuitive, emotional approach. His work, at the crossroads of documentary and visual poetry, revolves around series that have become emblematic, such as Scanno, Pretini, La Buona Terra, Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto, and his landscapes of the Marches, crafted like contemporary engravings. Exhibited in major international institutions - MoMA in New York, Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Elysée Photo in Lausanne, BnF in Paris - Mario Giacomelli is now recognised for his decisive contribution to expressive photography, where reality becomes the medium for inner exploration. His prints bear witness to a constant rejection of photographic neutrality : for him, the image is first and foremost a place of poetic engagement, a space where the intimate meets the universal.
