Some 3,500 years ago, God commanded the newly liberated Hebrew slaves to offer a unique burnt offering to deal with the defilement of death. The ritual created the ashes of a red heifer, some hyssop, scarlet wool, and a piece of cedar which were to be kept outside the Tabernacle and later the Temple. These ashes were then to be added to fresh water and sprinkled on anyone needing cleansing before they could enter the holy places.
