Surgical interventions used for the treatment of cancer are under the scope of surgical oncology. Palliative surgery, minimally invasive procedures and neo-adjuvant treatments characterize modern surgical oncology. Surgical procedures can be palliative or curative. Palliative surgery is the surgical intervention that is targeted at relieving a patient's symptoms and making a positive impact on the patient's quality of life. It can involve simpler procedures to extensive debulking. Tumor debulking can also be performed for curative intent, as in cytoreduction or cytoreductive surgery. It is also performed to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Adrenalectomy, clitoridectomy, coccygectomy, cystoprostatectomy, colectomy, esophagectomy, etc. are some surgical procedures concerned with the removal of certain body parts where a tumor has developed.
