      Sommaire:
Greece, a nation between East, West and the memory of the past... The Greek nation, the architect of classical splendor, did not have a state of its own until the beginning of the 19th century. The revolution of 1821 not only marked the beginning of its independence after centuries of Ottoman rule: it ignited a wave of romantic enthusiasm in Europe and raised a question that is still relevant two centuries later: what it means to be Greek in the modern world. Since then, Greece has lived an intense and complex history, marked by great aspirations and deep fractures. The country of Orthodoxy and Byronic dreams, of Balkan wars and political exile, of Italian-German invasion and resistance, of military junta and European Union membership, has forged an identity of its own amid classical nostalgia, Byzantine legacy, and pressure from the West and Turkey. In this exceptional book, Roderick Beaton traces more than two centuries of history with erudition and narrative mastery. Through deeds and defeats, symbols and political decisions, he traces the living portrait of a country that has had to invent - and reinvent - itself in order to survive. This is the gripping story of a small nation that has managed to play a key role in the political and cultural history of modern Europe....
