Mesopotamia, the land watered by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, was the home of the great hero Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk who did not want to die, and of the Tower of Babel, the biblical monument to the confusion of languages. Despite its historical significance as the cradle of civilization, the Mesopotamian world is largely unknown. It seems accessible only to a select few, the Assyriologists and Oriental archaeologists capable of deciphering cuneiform writing and reading the layers of the ancient adobe hills that dot the ancient geography of Iraq and Syria. With the aim of revealing the contribution of the Mesopotamians to the history of humanity, Juan Luis Montero Fenoll?s has written this book, which is the result of his long archaeological experience at sites in the Middle East. The result is a book in which the author explains the true historical and cultural significance of ancient Mesopotamia. He does so through a careful selection of seven major thematic areas: water, the city, royalty, justice, writing, religion, and death....

Juan Luis Montero Fenoll?s (Lorca, 1968). Es Doctor en Historia por la Universidad de Barcelona y profesor titular de Historia Antigua de la Facultad de Humanidades de la Universidad de A Coru?a (campus de Ferrol). Cuenta con m?s de treinta a?os de experiencia en arqueolog?a de Oriente Pr?ximo, en particular, en Siria, Palestina e Iraq. Es presidente de la Sociedad Cient?fica 'Centro de Estudios del Pr?ximo Oriente', Caballero de la Orden de las Palmas Acad?micas de Francia, y director de la c?tedra institucional de Arqueolog?a y Educaci?n patrimonial de la Universidad de A Coru?a. Ha publicado diversas monograf?as sobre arqueolog?a proximoriental.
