Alfred Bester (1913-1987) was an American science fiction writer, screenwriter, and editor whose work helped redefine the possibilities of speculative fiction in the mid-twentieth century. Beginning his career in pulp magazines and comic books, Bester later achieved lasting acclaim with the novels The Demolished Man and The Stars My Destination.The Demolished Man (1953), a pioneering exploration of telepathy and crime, won the first Hugo Award for Best Novel. The Stars My Destination (1956) combined revenge narrative, psychological intensity, and bold stylistic experimentation, securing Bester's reputation as one of the most innovative voices of the genre. His fiction is marked by narrative energy, structural daring, and an interest in the extremes of human ambition and transformation.Though his output was relatively small compared to some contemporaries, Bester's influence has been profound.
