The community was also very active in the abolitionist and suffrage movements, and many Painesville houses, taverns, and churches were stations along the Underground Railroad in the pre-Civil War years. Today, the city is positioned for a bright future, with new businesses and services investing in the community.

A resident of northeast Ohio for more than two decades, Sandy Mitchell Pavick is a full-time writer and active participant in community affairs. She has penned three previous titles about Ohio history for Arcadia Publishing.
