Edward Elmer Doc Smith (1890-1965) was an American science fiction writer best known as one of the pioneers of space opera. Trained as a food engineer and holding a doctorate in chemistry, Smith brought a background in science to the grand, interstellar adventures that defined his fiction.He achieved early fame with The Skylark of Space (co-written with Lee Hawkins Garby), one of the foundational works of large-scale interplanetary adventure.
