Biographie:
Julian Hawthorne was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1846. He was the son of celebrated novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne and artist Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. Raised partly in the United States and partly in Europe, he attended Harvard College and later studied engineering in Germany before turning to literature and journalism.Hawthorne became a prolific novelist, short-story writer, critic, biographer, historian, and newspaper correspondent. His fiction often combined Gothic atmosphere, romance, mystery, psychology, and supernatural speculation. Among his best-known works are Bressant, Idolatry, Archibald Malmaison, Sebastian Strome, and a series of early detective novels featuring Inspector Barnes. He also edited and published material connected with his father's life and literary career.Although frequently compared with Nathaniel Hawthorne, Julian developed a more sensational and commercially driven style suited to the popular fiction market of the late nineteenth century. His long career also included journalism, travel writing, and historical works. He died in San Francisco in 1934, leaving behind a large and varied body of writing that reflects the development of American Gothic, mystery, and speculative fiction....
