Noble ex-warrior Rytius Coleman, one of the leaders of the so-called recordkeepers, a loose grouping of dissident intellectuals, receives a letter meant for his brother Ritius, the Prince's sergeant at arms. The Prince has struggled to maintain the balance of power not only between the King of New York and the Virginian Dominion, but also among himself and his two brothers, with whom he rules North New Jersey. The letter opens a conflict that cuts to the very heart of the rivalry of both sets of brothers, the factions among the recordkeepers, the sovereignty of North New Jersey, the warring kingdoms of the Atlantic Coast, and the future of the past....
