Thomas More (1478-1535) was an English statesman, lawyer, scholar, and humanist writer of the Renaissance. Educated at Oxford and trained in law, he became one of the most respected intellectual figures of his age and a close associate of the humanist scholar Erasmus.More served as Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII, becoming one of the highest-ranking officials in the realm. His refusal to acknowledge the king as Supreme Head of the Church of England ultimately led to his arrest and execution in 1535. More was later canonised as a saint by the Catholic Church.His most famous work, Utopia (1516), written in Latin, is a landmark of Renaissance humanist literature and political philosophy. The book's imaginative exploration of an ideal society gave the English language the word utopia, and it continues to influence discussions of politics, ethics, and social organisation....
