Biographie:
Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was an English writer, journalist, and businessman who is best known for his novels, particularly Robinson Crusoe, which is widely considered to be one of the first novels in the English language. Defoe was born in London to a wealthy Presbyterian family and was educated at a dissenting academy. Defoe initially worked in the hosiery trade but later turned to writing, publishing a variety of political and social commentary in newspapers and pamphlets. He was a prolific writer, producing over 500 works during his lifetime, including novels, poetry, and essays. Defoe's most famous novel, Robinson Crusoe, was published in 1719 and tells the story of a man who is shipwrecked on a deserted island and must survive on his own. The novel was a huge success and has been translated into numerous languages. In addition to his literary pursuits, Defoe was involved in politics and served as a spy and propagandist for the British government. Defoe died in 1731 and is remembered as one of the most important figures in English literature, as well as a pioneering journalist and political commentator....
Sommaire:
Daniel Defoe (c. 1660-1731) was an English novelist, journalist, pamphleteer, merchant, political writer, and one of the major prose innovators of the early eighteenth century. Born in London, he lived through a period of plague memory, fire, religious conflict, political upheaval, commercial expansion, and the rise of print culture. Before becoming famous as a novelist, Defoe worked in trade, suffered business failures, wrote political pamphlets, and became one of the most energetic and controversial writers of his age.Defoe is best known for Robinson Crusoe, often discussed as one of the early English novels, but his range was much wider. He wrote fiction, travel narratives, economic commentary, religious works, conduct books, political satire, criminal lives, and journalistic accounts that blurred the line between fact and invention. His major works include Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders, Roxana, Captain Singleton, A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain, and A Journal of the Plague Year. His prose is marked by realism, practical detail, documentary texture, and a powerful ability to make invented voices feel like eyewitness testimony. In A Journal of the Plague Year, Defoe drew on historical memory, records, oral accounts, and imaginative reconstruction to portray London during the Great Plague of 1665. The book's enduring force comes from its combination of narrative urgency and social observation: Defoe understood how crisis exposes fear, selfishness, courage, faith, rumor, class difference, and the fragile machinery of public order. Today he remains central to the history of the English novel, journalism, realism, and the literature of survival under extraordinary pressure....
