Résumé :
The Sea Beggar Series of four historical novels is about the life and times of a privateer during the period of Queen Anne's War and its immediate aftermath. It is the story of Ephraim Bogardus a Hudson River mariner who uses his New York built Hudson River Sloop for privateering and trading in commodities like tobacco, flour, and coca in North Carolina and the Caribbean. In this fourth novel in the series The Sea Beggar: Pirates, Ephraim has decided that he wants to retire from privateering and concentrate on only doing peaceful commodities trading and give up privateering. Queen Anne's War is over and many former privateers have turned to piracy. Ephraim has been able to continue to do privateering with a letter of marque he has been able to acquire from the King of Denmark. Ephraim wants to make a few more cruises before retiring but must deal with pirates that may put a stop to his well laid plans....

James B. Battles is a native of Ohio. He did is undergraduate studies at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio majoring in history, political science, and naval science. He was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy upon graduation. He served four years on active duty during the Viet Nam War. After completing active duty, he pursued graduate studies obtaining a Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. Dr. Battles pursued a career in medical education and was a professor of Biomedical Communications and medical education at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas Texas. He continued to serve in the Naval Reserve obtaining the rank of Captain before retiring from the Navy. His Naval reserve unit was recalled during Desert Storm, in Gulf War I. While at UT Southwestern, Dr. Battles began to specialize in patient safety research. After retiring from UT Southwestern, he worked for the federal government at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in Rockville, Maryland before finally retiring a third time. He is the author of a number of professional journal articles book chapters and monographs in the area of medical education and patient safety. Since his retirement he has been devoting time to publishing family history and genealogy works. He has also begun writing historical novels based on his family's history and his personal adventures. Captain Battles continues his love of the sea from his Navy days by sailing on the Chesapeake Bay as often as he can. He has also chartered sailboats in the Caribbean where he served as skipper. It is this connection to sailing sloops that makes the maritime heritage of his Bogardus ancestors so interesting to him given his Navy background...
