Présentation Lucy's Conversations de Abbott, Jacob Format Broché
- Livre Littérature Générale
Résumé :
Lucy's Conversations is one of Jacob Abbott's early Cousin Lucy books, a nineteenth-century children's work built around conversation, moral instruction, and everyday learning. Written by the author of the Rollo books, the story uses domestic scenes, questions, explanations, and gentle incidents to guide young readers through habits of attention, conduct, curiosity, and reflection. Abbott's method is characteristically plain and instructional, but it is also carefully shaped for children: lessons emerge through dialogue, observation, and the ordinary world of family life. As part of Abbott's larger body of educational fiction, Lucy's Conversations belongs to the tradition of classic American children's literature that joined storytelling with moral formation. The book reflects the nineteenth-century belief that children's reading should cultivate judgement, self-command, kindness, patience, and practical understanding. For readers interested in vintage children's books, early American juvenile fiction, moral tales, educational stories, and Jacob Abbott's Rollo and Cousin Lucy series, this volume is a useful and readable example of his enduring approach to childhood instruction. Google Books shows an 1844 B. B. Mussey edition of Cousin Lucy's Conversations, while nineteenth-century girls' series references list the title as first appearing in 1841....
Biographie:
Jacob Abbott (1803-1879) was an American author, educator, minister, and one of the most prolific writers of nineteenth-century juvenile and educational literature. Born in Maine and educated at Bowdoin College and Andover Theological Seminary, Abbott wrote hundreds of books for children, families, schools, and general readers. His work includes the famous Rollo books, the Franconia stories, practical moral tales, educational works, and historical biographies written for young readers. Abbott's fiction often combines narrative interest with lessons in judgment, conduct, self-control, kindness, industry, and responsibility.Abbott's importance lies in his role in shaping American children's literature before the modern juvenile market fully developed. His books were designed for family reading, school use, and moral instruction, but they also preserve detailed pictures of nineteenth-century childhood, domestic life, rural communities, travel, work, and education. Mary Erskine, A Franconia Story, first published in 1850, belongs to the Franconia group and reflects Abbott's characteristic interest in ordinary life as a field for moral development. He remains significant for readers and collectors of classic children's books, early American juvenile fiction, educational literature, and nineteenth-century moral tales....
