The market town of Beccles lies on the River Waveney, close to the Norfolk Broads and floods have been part of its history. Once a river port, it is still a boating center. Its Saxon and Norse origins can be seen in many of the street names, as can its wealth in mediaeval and pre-Industrial Revolution times with its numerous historic buildings. More recent industries included printing, tanning and a corset factory, and the Nobel prize-winning chemist Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin was educated in Beccles.A-Z of Beccles reveals the history behind Beccles, its streets and buildings, businesses and the people connected with the town. Alongside the famous historical connections, are unusual characters, tucked away places and unique events that are less well-known. It is fully illustrated with photography and will appeal to all those with an interest in this historic Suffolk town....
Biographie:
After a career in education, including ten years as a head-teacher, followed by work as an educational researcher, consultant and university tutor, Dr. Barry Darch continues his life-long passion for local and family history. A keen supporter of the U3A (University of the Third Age) he has led groups researching the history of Beccles Public Hall and Lido. He has been joint convenor of the Beccles U3A Family History Group, is chairman of the trustees of Beccles and District Museum, often gives presentations on the town's intriguing past and is currently serving as Mayor of Beccles. His recent MA dissertation (The Open University) focused on local adult education in the 19th century....
