Sommaire:
Or, Constancy Unrewarded is a stage play by George Bernard Shaw, adapted from his own novel Cashel Byron's Profession. The play is written in blank verse and is divided into three acts. It explores themes of social class, love, and the nature of true gentlemanliness through the story of Cashel Byron, a prizefighter, and Lydia Carew, a wealthy and educated woman. The narrative unfolds as Cashel, who is training for a boxing match, encounters Lydia in her park. Despite their different social standings, a mutual attraction develops. However, Cashel's profession and his mother's background as an actress pose obstacles to their relationship. Lydia, intrigued by Cashel's strength and character, struggles with societal expectations and her own feelings. The play also features Lucian, Lydia's cousin, who disapproves of Cashel, and Bashville, Lydia's footman, who harbors his own feelings for her. The climax occurs during a boxing match attended by a Zulu king, Cetewayo, where Cashel's prowess is on full display. The play concludes with a reflection on the challenges of love and societal norms, leaving the audience to ponder the true meaning of constancy and reward....
