11 June 1851 - 24 March 1920) was a British novelist who wrote as Mrs Humphry Ward under her marital name. She campaigned to enhance disadvantaged children's education and was the first President of the Women's National Anti-Suffrage League. Mary Augusta Arnold was born into a distinguished intellectual family of writers and educators in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Mary was the daughter of Tom Arnold, a literature professor, and Julia Sorell. Her uncle was the poet Matthew Arnold, and her grandfather was the famed Rugby School headmaster Thomas Arnold. Julia Huxley ran a school and married Leonard Huxley, who had two sons, Julian and Aldous Huxley. The Arnolds and Huxleys had a significant impact on British intellectual life. Mary's father, Tom Arnold, was appointed inspector of schools in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) on January 15, 1850. Tom Arnold was accepted into the Roman Catholic Church on January 12, 1856, making him so unpopular at work (and with his wife) that he quit and moved to England with his family in July 1856. Mary Arnold had celebrated her fifth birthday a month before they left, and she had no further ties to Tasmania....
