Résumé :
Christopher and Columbus is a captivating novel written by way of Elizabeth von Arnim, regarded for her wit and eager observations. The story revolves around two cousins, Christopher and Columbus, who're orphaned and dwelling in straitened occasions in Edwardian England. The cousins, each younger and vivacious, decide to break out their bleak lifestyles through embarking on an adventure to seek employment as partners to aged women. They write letters to potential employers, pretending to be young ladies of grace and competence, with names borrowed from records - Christopher Columbus and Joan of Arc. These aliases symbolize their aspirations for freedom and exploration. The novel is a pleasing satire on the Edwardian era's social conventions and the restricted opportunities available to younger ladies. As Christopher and Columbus navigate the absurdities of a world wherein ladies are frequently relegated to based roles, their unconventional spirit and determination offer a sparkling perspective on the society of the time. Elizabeth Von Arnim's wit and humor shine thru the ebook, making it a delightful examine. Christopher and Columbus isn't most effective a commentary on gender roles and societal norms but also a heartwarming tale of two lively younger ladies in search of their own direction in a world that seeks to restrict them.
Biographie:
Elizabeth von Arnim (31 August 1866 - 9 February 1941) was an English novelist born Mary Annette Beauchamp. She was born in Australia, married a German aristocrat, and her early works take place in Germany. Her first marriage elevated her to the title of Countess von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and her second marriage elevated her to the title of Countess Russell. Following the death of her first husband, she had a three-year affair with novelist H. G. Wells, and then married Frank Russell, the elder brother of Nobel laureate and philosopher Bertrand Russell. Katherine Mansfield, a New Zealand-born novelist, was her cousin. Though she was born May, her debut novel introduced her to readers as Elizabeth, which she later became to friends and family. Elizabeth von Arnim is credited with her writings. She wrote only one novel under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley, Christine, in 1917. She was born on Kirribilli Point in Sydney, Australia, to rich shipping entrepreneur Henry Herron Beauchamp (1825-1907) and Elizabeth (nicknamed Louey) Weiss Lassetter (1836-1919). Her family referred to her as May. She was the youngest of five siblings. Kathleen Beauchamp, who was born in New Zealand and wrote under the pen name Katherine Mansfield, was one of her cousins. The family went to England when she was three years old, where they lived in London but also spent several years in Switzerland.
