She was born in Australia, married a German aristocrat, and her early works take place in Germany. Her first marriage elevated her to the title of Countess von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and her second marriage elevated her to the title of Countess Russell. Following the death of her first husband, she had a three-year affair with novelist H. G. Wells, and then married Frank Russell, the elder brother of Nobel laureate and philosopher Bertrand Russell. Katherine Mansfield, a New Zealand-born novelist, was her cousin. Though she was born May, her debut novel introduced her to readers as Elizabeth, which she later became to friends and family. Elizabeth von Arnim is credited with her writings. She wrote only one novel under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley, Christine, in 1917.
