Biographie:
Cameron Jamie (b. 1969) is an aesthetic outlier and artistic maverick whose artworks have been challenging categorizations and conventions for more than three decades. A multi-faceted practitioner whose influential artworks encompass a wide range of artistic cross-disciplines, Jamie's investigative and cultural explorations into lesser-known iconographies have analyzed how the structures of mythology and rituals in popular and vernacular cultures are shaped and shared, and the extent to which they participate in the creation of individuals' fictional worlds and fictional selves. Jamie grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles where, early on in his life he developed an interest in a variety of art-making disciplines and a focus on vernacular art forms and sub-cultural phenomena. Much later his area of interest expanded and developed into a series of groundbreaking short films exploring and documenting contemporary cultural myths, private ritualistic events and pagan themed holidays. Over the past two decades Jamie has continued to expand his visual vocabulary by pushing artistic boundaries further with his artist books, printmaking, drawing, painting and sculptural practices. Fils interest in ceramics led him to experiment with unorthodox approaches and techniques pushing the technical conventions traditionally associated with the medium. Cameron Jamie was born in Los Angeles in 1969. Since 2000, he has been living in Paris. Major solo exhibitions of his work have taken place in institutions and museums such as the Kunsthalle Zurich, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Cambridge, Massachusetts . Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, Museum der Morderne Salzburg and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Jamie has also participated in group exhibitions at the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, MoMA PS1 in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris and Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. He participated in the 58th Venice Biennale, the 6th Berlin Biennale and the 2006 Whitney Biennial of American Art. Jamie's films have been screened in festivals worldwide and he was the subject of major film retrospectives at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Cineteca Nacional Mexico, Mexico City . and the 46th Festival Internacional de Cine de Gijón, Spain. In 2016, Jamie was the recipient of the Prix de dessin de la Fondation d'art contemporain Daniel et Florence Guerlain in France. In the Interview, Philippe Vergne discusses with the artist the fascinating genesis, intentions, working methodology and stories that helped to shape his interdisciplinary art practice. Ralph Rugoff's Survey analyzes the various stages of Jamie's career, from his early film and photographic projects and performances to his ceramic culptures, artist books and drawngs. In the focus, Elena Filipovic writes about Kranky Klaus, the iconic film Jamie made in 2002 about the Krampus - a traditional pre-Christian ritual that takes place every December in the Austrian Alpine region. For Artist's Choice, Jamie has selected an extract from Joseph Campbell's seminal book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) . the sheet music and lyrics of ? & the mysterians 1966 hit song 96 Tears . and a news press report from Los Angeles (1995). Artist's writings include a selection of pages from Jamie's self-published books.
