The story of Vagabondo, a collection of male nudes and portraits, begins in Ireland, in spring time, with farmhands cavorting in lush fields and rustic farm yards, then moves across to industrial London and, after a brief interlude of fighting athleticism, cuts to Italy where labourers work and camp out in derelict palazzos in Sicily and Puglia. With their grace and beauty revealed amidst gorgeous decay they wrestle in cleansing showers and are finally submerged in Sistine waters. The cathartic climax occurs atop black mountains and amidst burnt forests and our now elevated vagrants assume Olympian status in this grim wilderness, before the volcanic landscape reveals ancient ocean cliffs and a pathway out of mythic winter melancholia, back into reality, a contemporary summer set around ocean surf, where the men can relax and revel.
