The subject of hooves is associated with numerous questions for many horse owners. Clarifying them can be life-decisive for the horse: Knowing about the horse's hoof is animal welfare. This manual describes in detail and in a clearly understandable way the functions and shape of the hoof as well as the influences acting on it. Hooves can thus be better assessed and communication with blacksmiths, farriers and veterinarians is facilitated. The processes in the hoof are explained in their interplay with the muscles and tendons of the horse's leg. Knowledge of these interrelationships trains awareness of the effects of conformation, posture, riding and lunging on the hoof and musculoskeletal system. Kati Jurth counters dogmas and short-lived trends about the horse's hoof with an objective and scientifically oriented view. Thus, the question of shoeing or barefoot is not decided according to a certain school, but on the basis of the current needs of the individual horse and, if necessary, in close consultation with veterinarians.
