Résumé :
All Flicker wanted was a chance to make the aliens understand. All the aliens wanted was a chance to kill him while they could. But there were things about Flicker that they hadn't counted on...
Biographie:
Alan E. Nourse (1928-1992) was an American science fiction writer, physician, and medical nonfiction author whose work often joined scientific speculation with practical human consequence. He wrote both juvenile and adult science fiction, contributing to the magazine tradition that shaped mid-twentieth-century speculative fiction. His fiction frequently explores medicine, science, technology, social pressure, and the ethical choices created by new knowledge.Nourse is also remembered for The Bladerunner, the 1974 novel whose title was later used, though not its plot, for the film Blade Runner. Across his stories and novels, Nourse brought a medically trained intelligence and a storyteller's economy to classic science fiction, producing work that remains of interest to readers of vintage SF, Golden Age magazine fiction, and idea-driven speculative adventure....
Sommaire:
A compact Golden Age science fiction story of first contact, fear, and the desperate possibility of understanding, Peacemaker shows Alan E. Nourse working in the sharp, idea-driven mode that made his short fiction memorable. The story follows Flicker, an envoy whose mission depends on reaching an alien enemy before panic, violence, and suspicion make peace impossible. Nourse gives the premise real urgency: communication is not treated as a simple technical problem, but as a test of nerve, imagination, and moral courage. The result is classic magazine science fiction built around a clear speculative problem, a dangerous encounter, and the question of whether intelligent beings can step back from destruction long enough to understand one another. For readers of vintage science fiction, alien contact stories, interplanetary adventure, and mid-century speculative fiction, Peacemaker offers a brisk example of Nourse's strengths: scientific imagination, clean pacing, human stakes, and a strong central idea.
