Rafael Sabatini was born in Iesi, Italy, to an English-speaking mother and an Italian father. His first book Scaramouche (1921) became an international bestseller. The Sea Hawk (1940) and Captain Blood (1924) were all made into films during the silent era. Rafael-Angelo (also known as Binkie), Sabatini's lone child, was killed in a vehicle accident on April 1st, 1927. Sabatini and his wife Ruth got divorced in 1931.
