        Drawing on the authors' more than six years of R&D experience in location-based information systems as well as their participation in defining the Java ME Location API 2.0, this text describes the technical components needed to create location-based services with an emphasis on nonproprietary, freely available solutions that work across different technologies and platforms. Each chapter presents a general real-time tracking system example that can be easily adapted to target any application domain and that can incorporate other sensor data to make the system participatory sensing or human-centric sensing.         Biographie:

        Miguel A. Labrador is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He has more than fifteen years of experience in the telecommunication industry and has published extensively in the field. Dr. Labrador is currently an editorial board member of Computer Communications and the Journal of Network and Computer Applications. He earned his Ph.D. in information science with concentration in telecommunications from the University of Pittsburgh.

        Alfredo J. P?rez is a member of the Location-Aware Information Systems Laboratory and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of South Florida. He is also a member of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. His research interests include mobile sensor networks, location-based systems, evolutionary algorithms, and multi-objective optimization.

        Pedro M. Wightman is a professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at the Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia. He is a member of the IEEE Communication Society and co-founder of CommNet, the Communication Networks Group at the University of South Florida. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the University of South Florida.
