Prim?res Ausdrucksmittel der chilenischen Ku?nstlerin Sandra V?squez de la Horra (geb. 1967 in Vin~a del Mar, Chile, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) ist die Zeichnung, die sie zur Vollendung in geschmolzenes Bienenwachs taucht. Dieses signifikante Verfahren verleiht den Papierarbeiten eine eigentu?mlich semitransparente und plastische Wirkung, wobei letztere in neueren Leporello- und hausartigen Objekten noch gesteigert wird. Die reiche symbolische Formensprache der Ku?nstlerin verwebt perso?nliche Erinnerungen mit jenen aus dem kollektiven Ged?chtnis. Dabei bezieht sie sich insbesondere auf ihre chilenische Herkunft, Pinochets Milit?rdiktatur und die komplexe Geschichte Lateinamerikas. Sterblichkeit, Wiedergeburt, Sexualit?t, Mythen und Rituale sowie die Idee einer Einheit von Mensch, Kosmos und Natur sind wiederkehrende Themen ihrer figu?rlich expressiven Arbeiten.

In Anspielung auf C. G. Jungs Theorie der Archetypen, die Elemente menschlicher Fantasie identifizierte, welche als Inhalte des kollektiven Unbewussten die perso?nlichen Imaginationen mitstrukturieren, fokussiert die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung in Berlin Das archetypische Ich auf dieses Ineinander von Individuellem und Kollektivem im Werk der Ku?nstlerin. Der Katalog zur Ausstellung im Gutshaus Steglitz versammelt ca. 80 Arbeiten aus den vergangenen 20 Jahren und bietet damit einen U?berblick u?ber Sandra V?squez de la Horras komplexes OEuvre, in das Jenny Graser, Raphael Fonseca und Friedhelm Mennekes einfu?hren.

Corporeal Drawings?

The Chilean artist Sandra V?squez de la Horra's (b. Vin~a del Mar, Chile, 1967; lives and works in Berlin) primary means of creative expression is the drawing, which she gives the finishing touch by dipping it in beeswax. This significant technique lends the works on paper a peculiar semitransparent and plastic effect; the latter is even more forceful in her more recent fanfolds and objects resembling houses. The artist's rich symbolic formal language interweaves personal recollections with episodes from the collective memory, drawing, in particular, on her Chilean roots, the Pinochet military dictatorship, and Latin America's complex history. Mortality, rebirth, sexuality, myths, and rituals as well as the idea of a union of man, cosmos, and nature are recurrent themes in her figural and expressive works.

Alluding to C.G. Jung's theory of archetypes, which identified elements of the human imagination that, as contents of the collective unconscious, partly structure personal fantasies, the artist's first institutional solo exhibition in Berlin, titled Das archetypische Ich, puts the focus on this interpenetration of the individual and the collective in the artist's work. The catalogue accompanying the exhibition at Gutshaus Steglitz gathers around eighty works from the past twenty years for an overview of Sandra V?squez de la Horra's complex oeuvre.
