It is perfect work and its organization is the only kind that would have succeeded under the circumstances.'' -Dr. Malcolm Watson, Report to Royal Colonial Institute, (1914) William Crawford Gorgas (1924) is a collaboration between the highly regarded historian Burton Hendrick and Marie Gorgas, the widow of William Gorgas. It extols the life story of Gorgas, who, as head of the Panama Canal Zone Sanitation Commission, blocked the spread of yellow fever and malaria by requiring practices which controlled the mosquitoes that carry these diseases. Because of his pioneering policies, Gorgas was credited with saving thousands of lives and enabling the construction of the Panama Canal.
Biographie:
MARIE D. GORGAS (1862-1929) was born Marie Cook Doughty in Chicago, Illinois. She was married to William Crawford Gorgas with whom she had six children. She is buried with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia. BURTON J. HENDRICK (1870-1949) was a respected American author and historian, who won several Pulitzer Prizes (for biography in 1923 for The Life and Letters of Walter H. Page and in 1929 for The Training of an American, and for history in 1921 for The Victory at Sea). Hendrick wrote many other books including Bulwark of the Republic and Lincoln's War Cabinet.
