Die Botschafterin des Lichtes?

Licht und Raum, Medien und Information sind zentrale Aspekte der vielschichtigen konzeptuellen Arbeit von Brigitte Kowanz (geb. 1957 in Wien, gest. 2022 ebenda). Die Ku?nstlerin wurde 2009 mit dem Gro?en O?sterreichischen Staatspreis ausgezeichnet und bespielte 2017 den O?sterreichischen Pavillon auf der 57. Biennale von Venedig. Von 1997 bis 2021 hatte sie eine Professur an der Universit?t fu?r Angewandte Kunst in Wien inne. Bis kurz vor ihrem Tod arbeitete Kowanz intensiv an der Installation ISTR, die ihren Entwu?rfen entsprechend im Schlossmuseum Linz posthum realisiert wurde. Die vier S?ulen im ersten Raum geben den Auftakt aus Neon, Spiegeln und Glas; jede ist mit einem der vier Buchstaben des Titels in Morsecode versehen: I S T R - I SEEM TO RECALL (Ich scheine mich zu erinnern) l?dt dazu ein, Kowanz' ku?nstlerischen Kosmos zu betreten. In ihrem OEuvre verbindet sich Sprachliches - politische Aussagen und Nachrichtenu?bertragungen - mit formaler A?sthetik, was veranschaulicht, dass Licht nicht blo? ein neutrales Vehikel fu?r Information ist, sondern diese entscheidend mitgestaltet.

Der Ausstellungskatalog zeigt neben der Neuproduktion ebenso ?ltere Werkserien aus den 1980er-Jahren in Gegenu?berstellung mit der Serie Flashbacks. Mittels QR-Codes werden zudem digitale Inhalte vermittelt. Mit Texten von Adrian Kowanz, Gala Rebane, Sabine Schaschl, Angela Stief und Alfred Weidinger.

The Messenger of Light?

Light and space, media and information are key aspects of Brigitte Kowanz's (b. Vienna, 1957; d. Vienna, 2022) multifaceted conceptual oeuvre. The artist was honored with the Grand Austrian State Prize in 2009 and presented her work in the Austrian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. From 1997 until 2021, she was a professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Kowanz worked on the installation ISTR with all her energy until shortly before her death, and the work has now been realized posthumously in accordance with her designs at Schlossmuseum Linz. The four pillars in the first room serve as a kind of introduction; executed in the artist's hallmark neon, mirrors, and glass, each bears one of the letters of the title in Morse code: I S T R -I SEEM TO RECALL is an invitation to delve into Kowanz's creative universe. Her art combines linguistic material-political statements and the transmission of messages-with a formal aesthetic, illustrating that light, far from being a mere neutral vehicle for information, is vital to shaping it.

The catalogue accompanying the exhibition features the new production as well as earlier series from the 1980s, in juxtaposition with the Flashbacks series.
